Geogrids Used for Retaining Wall Construction in Highway Construction in Sichuan, China

This project is located on Ganhe Road, Huacheng New District, Panzhihua, Sichuan, China. The construction content of Ganhe Road in Huacheng New District includes road engineering, bridge engineering and site leveling engineering in the construction area.

There are 5 roads in the district with a total length of 3961.733m, including Ganhe Road, Ganlian Road, Gantian Road, Ganxi Road and Gantong Road (end section).

Ganhe Road, Ganlian Road, Gantian Road and Ganxi Road are all urban branch roads, with two lanes in both directions and a design speed of 20km/h.

Gantong Road (end section) is a secondary urban road with four lanes in both directions and a design speed of 30km/h.

Project issues to be solved

In the construction drawing design, the K0+580-K0+880 section on the left side of Ganhe Road is a fill slope, with a road elevation of 1226.818m-1241.374m, a maximum fill of about 40m, and a corresponding elevation of 1132.816m for pile number K0+680.

During the survey and design, because the function and use of the adjacent plots on the outside were not determined and there was no building layout plan, the slope of this section was temporarily sloped, divided into five levels of slopes, with slope ratios of 1:1.5, 1:1.75, 1:1.75, 1:2, and 1:2, respectively, and the slope surface was herringbone frame and grass.

The latest building layout plan is that the entire platform gradually rises from west to east, and a cultural research center and dormitory area are arranged along the Ganhe Road side, and a fire truck lane is set up with a width of 7m.

The fire lane elevation corresponding to the pile number K0+680 of Ganhe Road is about 1202m, the original ground elevation is 1192.5m, and the elevation of Ganhe Road is 1232.816m, with a maximum height difference of about 31m from the fire lane.

The 40m high fill slope of this section of Ganhe Road has miscellaneous fill soil on the upper part of the foundation and silty mudstone and muddy siltstone on the lower part, with a maximum bearing capacity of only 240KPa.

Retaining wall treatment plan

Because the site is located in a gully, the base foundation conditions are poor, and the road surface has a longitudinal slope, the retaining wall adopts foundation treatment + anti-slide piles + three-stage vertical reinforced retaining wall + drainage treatment measures, and the steps are set horizontally.

The wall surface adopts precast concrete panels, and the reinforcement material adopts integral steel-plastic geogrids, with a vertical layer spacing of 0.4m.

In the reinforced earth retaining wall area, the height of the upper two levels of the wall does not exceed 10m, and the height of the lowest level of the wall does not exceed 12m. It needs to be adjusted according to the actual terrain, and a 2m wide platform is set between the two slopes.

In the single-stage reinforced retaining wall area, the wall height is 1 to 8m, which needs to be adjusted according to the actual terrain, and drainage ditches are set at the top and bottom of the slope.

A 2m rough stone concrete breast wall is set on the top of the wall to facilitate the later municipal pipeline laying.

1) Scope of reinforced earth retaining wall

The reinforced earth retaining wall is from K0+620 to K0+820, about 1200m long, with counterweight retaining walls at both ends.

2) Section of reinforced earth retaining wall

The first-level reinforcement length of K0+620-K0+820 is 26m.

The second-level reinforcement length of K0+660-K0+720 is 26m.

The reinforcement length of K0+720-K0+740 transitions from the second-level 26m of K0+720 to the third-level 30m of K0+740.

The second-level reinforcement length of K0+740-K0+820 is 26m.

3) Filling of reinforced earth retaining wall

The wall-filling uses excavated waste, the comprehensive internal friction angle of the filling is not less than 35 degrees, and the compaction degree is not less than 93%.

4) Waterproofing/drainage of reinforced earth retaining wall

Waterproofing/drainage is located in the two-level retaining wall area. A 400mm thick well-graded gravel horizontal drainage layer is set under each step of the retaining wall. A one-cloth-one-membrane composite geomembrane is laid on the steps and then sealed with plain concrete to prevent rainwater from seeping in.
